Notice to Passengers – Lightning Alerts

11 July 2019, 14:47

Subject: Lightning Alerts

Since lightning is associated with heat, the arrival of summer with its warmer temperatures increases the possibility of thunderstorms.

When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued for the Greater Montréal area, it can impact airport operations. The safety of employees working on YUL’s apron and passengers is always the top priority of ADM Aéroports de Montréal. For this reason, employees are not allowed to circulate on the apron during a lightning strike alert. Ground operations such as the transportation of baggage, refueling and aircraft marshalling are disrupted as a result. Such measures may cause delays for many flights.

At all times, we invite passagers to check their flight’s status with their airline before coming to the airport.

Did you know?
YUL is equipped with a detection system for lightning and electrical storms in the atmosphere within a 16 km radius. When lightning is 8 km from the airport site, flashing lights are displayed on the buildings, advising personnel to enter the airport terminal. Lightning and storm cells are particularly dangerous in the open spaces around the airport’s ground operations.
